Five Grecian Beaches
home
With crystal clear blue waters, superb weather and excellent infrastructure, Greece really is one of the top beach holiday destinations in Europe. Although a proportion of the country’s coasts now swarm with package-holidaymakers in search of sea and sun, there are still some beautiful and largely unfrequented beaches waiting for you to discover them, especially off the mainland.
Here’s a breakdown of five of the best:
1. Sarakiniko
Located on Elafonisos Island in the Peloponnese, Sarakiniko is one of the most tranquil beaches in the country. Mostly undiscovered and deserted for the greater part of the year, it features long stretches of golden sands, irresistible sea and a close proximity to two other stunning beaches so you’ll never get tired of the area.
2. Egremnoi
This Lefkadaian beach combines golden sands and calm waters with stunning scenery – several tourist guides describe it as a “true paradise”. The beach’s isolated location on the west coast of Lefkada, together with the thousand make-shift concrete steps down, means it isn’t the easiest place to reach, but this very fact gives the beach its charm, since it’s virtually deserted.
3. Myrtos
Myrtos was voted as the best beach in Greece a few years ago and when you see it for yourself, you’ll know why. Located among the steep cliffs of western Kefalonia, its blue waters and white pebbles make for the most fabulous holiday pictures. Again, not the easiest beach in Greece to get to – but certainly worth the effort.
4. Erimoupolis
Located at the northern tip of eastern Crete, this beautiful beach is a must-see and it holds a scenic position next to an ancient cemetery. A visit is both relaxing and an archaeological pleasure – the drive to Erimoupolis takes in the abandoned town of Itanos as well as some other ancient ruins.
5. Myrtidiotissa
Another island destination, Myrtidotissa on Corfu is a beach of unparalleled beauty. The road down can be problematic for vehicles, so most drivers choose to park high above the beach near the monastery of Myrtidotissa and walk down a kilometer of dirt track to reach their destination. It’s definitely worth the descent – you come out in a small bay surrounded by tall cliffs, featuring soft golden sands and perfect waters.
